Museums in:

El Paso, Texas

Natural History

The Centennial Museum has gradually refined its mission over its now seventy years of life; it is the oldest museum in El Paso and as such was initially El Paso's attic! The vision now is to provide lively displays about the Chihuahuan Desert as habitat and about the animals and peoples that have lived in it, the challenges they face, and the fascination of this, the largest desert in North America. Temporary special exhibits explore a wide range of issues about border life and culture, and about life in the Americas.

Old Fort Bliss Museum

Fort Bliss, Texas

Children's, General, History, Historic House, Military, Park

In an effort to present a more accurate picture of Fort Bliss at Magoffinsville site, the buildings now house “period rooms” representing life at the post and surrounding area in 1857. The garrison then consisted of several companies of the 8th Infantry and a company Regiment of Mounted Rifles. Daily activities necessary to house, feed, and maintain a military force at a remote frontier outpost are interpreted in the period rooms and work yard. All of the uniforms, tools, and equipment are authentic reproductions (rather than artifacts) to permit their use by trained, costumed interpreters during school programs and special events.

History

The El Paso City Museums derive originally from the International Museum, a one-time private institution, which was located in the old Turney home at 1201 Montana. The collections were eclectic, containing items of natural history and world culture, as well as some art and local history.

In the late 1950s, an arrangement was made with the Kress Foundation for a "permanent" loan of medieval and renaissance art. At that time, the building and the collections were turned over to the City, in return for City staffing and maintenance.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future

We are excited for you to join us in Cincinnati as we encourage discussion about our democracy and civic institutions and how they can help strengthen understanding, inspire action, and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.
